What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy — and Is It Right for You?

If you've been hearing more about hyperbaric oxygen therapy lately — from professional athletes, longevity researchers, and wellness communities alike — you're not imagining things. HBOT has moved from hospital settings into everyday wellness, and it's one of the most powerful tools available for recovery, inflammation, cognitive health, and anti-aging.
At Hype Wellness Studio in San Juan Capistrano, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of our signature offerings — and we want you to truly understand it before you book your first session. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing concentrated oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried through the body primarily by red blood cells. But in a hyperbaric environment — where air pressure is increased to 1.3–1.5 times normal atmospheric pressure — oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, lymph, and bone tissue.
This means your body can absorb up to three times more oxygen than it normally would. The result? Accelerated healing, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and enhanced cellular function throughout your entire body.
What Does HBOT Actually Do to Your Body?
The science behind HBOT is well-established. When you flood your tissues with oxygen at elevated pressure, several important things happen at the cellular level:
New blood vessels form (angiogenesis), improving circulation to areas that were previously oxygen-deprived
Inflammation pathways are modulated, reducing chronic inflammation that drives pain and disease
Stem cell production increases up to 8-fold, supporting tissue repair throughout the body
Mitochondria produce more ATP — the fuel every cell in your body runs on
Collagen synthesis increases, supporting skin elasticity, joint health, and wound healing
Brain neuroplasticity is enhanced, supporting cognitive function, focus, and mood
Who Is HBOT Right For?
At Hype Wellness Studio, we're a wellness facility — not a medical clinic — and we see clients across a wide spectrum of goals and needs. HBOT is popular with:
Athletes and active individuals looking to speed recovery between training sessions and reduce muscle soreness
Professionals dealing with brain fog, fatigue, and the cognitive demands of high-performance careers
Wellness enthusiasts pursuing longevity, anti-aging protocols, and biohacking
Individuals managing chronic inflammation, joint pain, or post-injury recovery (in consultation with their physician)
Anyone interested in optimizing sleep quality, skin health, and overall energy levels
Mild HBOT vs. Medical HBOT: What's the Difference?
You may have heard of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a medical context — hospitals use hard-shell chambers at higher pressures (2.0–3.0 ATA) to treat conditions like decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and diabetic foot wounds. These are FDA-approved medical treatments requiring physician supervision.
At Hype, we offer mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) in soft-shell chambers at 1.3–1.5 ATA — the pressure range used for general wellness, athletic recovery, and performance optimization. Our chambers use OneBase Health technology, and all sessions are conducted in a comfortable, relaxing environment.
What to Expect at Your First HBOT Session at Hype
First-timers are often surprised by how comfortable and even enjoyable a hyperbaric session is. Here's what the experience looks like:
Check-in and brief intake: We'll ask about your health history and goals to help you get the most from your session.
Enter the chamber: Our soft-shell chambers are spacious and comfortable. You'll lie down in a relaxed position — many clients read, listen to a podcast, or simply rest.
Pressurization: The chamber gradually pressurizes over several minutes. You may feel mild pressure in your ears — similar to being on a plane — which equalizes easily by swallowing or yawning.
Your session: Most sessions run 60–90 minutes. The oxygen-rich environment goes to work immediately at the cellular level.
Depressurization and check-out: The chamber slowly returns to normal pressure. Many clients report improved clarity and energy almost immediately after.
Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Safe?
Mild HBOT at 1.3–1.5 ATA is considered very safe for healthy adults and has a well-established safety profile. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and has no downtime. Side effects are rare — the most common is temporary ear pressure during pressurization, which resolves easily.
We recommend a brief consultation before your first session. HBOT is not recommended for individuals with certain lung conditions, recent ear surgery, or active fever. Our team will walk through any questions you have before you step into the chamber.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
Results from HBOT are cumulative — each session builds on the last. For general wellness, a starting protocol of 10–20 sessions is common. Athletes use targeted blocks of 5–10 sessions around competition or training phases. For longevity and anti-aging goals, many clients integrate 1–2 sessions per week as an ongoing practice.
We'll help you build a personalized plan based on your goals at your first consultation — no one-size-fits-all protocols here.
